Scene from "The Flats" musical drama retells important Garland history at Juneteenth 2025

The story of the Garland Colored School's memorable move through downtown Garland was retold when a key scene from last year's "The Flats" musical drama went on stage during Garland's Juneteenth 2025.

The three talented GISD student actors that gave of themselves to the community when "The Flats" musical drama was performed in 2024 reprised one of the play's most important scenes during Garland's Juneteenth observance on the main stage (June 14, 2025).

Narrator Debbie Scott, a member of the sponsoring Friends of Garland's Historic Magic 11th Street, gave the background of the play. Actors Skylynn Mims and Corinne Parker played daughter and mother, musing over the move of a building through downtown Garland in the mid-1930s during days of segregation. Actor Amelia Walker was the Anglo student that breezed through and waved, giving the mother a chance to explain about how white children attended school separately in those days.

The brief presentation on the big stage between announcements and entertainment gave the Friends organization a chance to help implant The Flats story once again in the minds of Garlandites. (The play with its original script and songs debuted in April 2024 at the Granville Arts Center.)
